Laundry and luggage on a longer China trip

Leave space in a longer trip for washing clothes and moving bags. A planned laundry stop and a small day bag make it easier to enjoy a garden, old town or train journey without carrying everything.

Start here

  1. Ask what laundry service your hotel provides and when clothes will be returned.
  2. Keep travel documents and everyday essentials in a separate bag.
  3. Choose luggage storage near the place where you will collect it.

Plan a washing stop before you run out

Before booking, ask whether the property has self-service machines, a washer and dryer, or a paid laundry service. Ask about detergent, opening hours, charges and drying arrangements. A washing machine alone may not let you finish a load before checkout.

Put laundry early in a two- or three-night stay. Keep a clean outfit available while clothes are washing or drying, and follow the care labels before using an unfamiliar machine.

Separate the day bag from the main suitcase

Use a small bag for your passport when needed, phone, payment method, water, tissues, a weather layer and essential medicine. This is the bag you want beside you on a transfer or during sightseeing.

Pack the suitcase so that hotel check-in and one-night stops do not require unpacking every item. A separate pouch for used clothing and a small kit for overnight essentials can make repeated moves much simpler.

Use hotel storage around checkout

Ask whether the hotel can store luggage before check-in or after checkout, and when you can collect it. Find out if there is a staffed storage room, a charge or a collection receipt. Keep valuables and original travel documents with you.

Choose the final outing around the collection point. A short nearby walk is more useful than traveling across the city and then doubling back to pick up bags before a train.

Check storage before building the day around it

Station and attraction storage arrangements differ. Look for the operator’s own storage information or ask staff about the location, size limits, cost and collection hours. Do not assume that every station has lockers or that a large suitcase will fit.

Keep the receipt and photograph the storage counter’s name. Make sure you can reach it again after leaving a paid attraction or passing through station security.

Finish each stay with a quick check

Before leaving the room, check the bathroom, chargers, sockets, wardrobe and safe. Count bags at the room, vehicle and station, especially when several people share a car. Keep passport and ticket checks in the same order at each move.

For airport transfers, tell us the number and size of bags as well as the passenger count. Mention a stroller, mobility aid or sports equipment so the vehicle arrangement can account for it.

Common questions

Can I leave a suitcase at every railway station?

Storage varies by station. Check the location, size limits and collection hours before planning sightseeing around it.

Should I wash clothes on the last evening?

Leave enough time for drying and delays. An earlier evening in a longer stay is usually easier than washing just before checkout.
