Taking trains in China: tickets, stations and boarding

Book with the traveler’s passport details, check the full station name and leave time for security and identity checks. The same city can have several stations, so compare the complete hotel-to-hotel journey rather than the train ride alone.

Start here

  1. Use the passenger’s name and document details exactly as required.
  2. Check the full departure and arrival station names.
  3. Carry the original document used to buy the ticket.

Choose the right service and stations

Search China Railway 12306 for the route, date, class and station pair. Check which station is closest to each hotel and how you will reach it with luggage. A fast train between distant stations can still mean a long overall journey.

Keep the train number, departure time, carriage and seat together in your booking record. Recheck the date when booking an overnight service or traveling close to midnight.

Book using your passport details

Create a 12306 account and complete the identity-verification steps for your document. Follow the instructions if the service asks for a passport photograph or additional verification. A railway ticket window can assist with document verification when online checks cannot be completed.

For every passenger, use the required name order and passport number carefully. Check children’s document and ticket rules separately. If you use another booking platform, read its service charge and distinguish a ticket request from a successfully issued reservation.

At the departure station

Arrive with the original passport used for purchase and your booking record. Allow extra time for an unfamiliar station, holiday queues or assistance. The station’s boarding gate closes before departure; reaching the building at departure time is too late.

Follow the screens for your train number and gate. If an automatic identity gate cannot read your passport, ask staff for the staffed inspection route. Keep your bags with you through security and waiting.

Boarding and arriving

Use the carriage number on your booking to find the right part of the platform, then your seat. Place luggage where it fits securely and keep aisles clear. Keep valuables and travel documents in your day bag.

Watch for your station and collect belongings before arrival. Follow the exit signs and retain your passport for any exit check. Use official taxi or booked-car pickup areas for the final hotel transfer.

Changes, refunds and missed connections

Open the original booking channel to read the change or refund options before purchasing a replacement. Availability, timing and ticket conditions determine what you can do. Ask station staff for help if departure is close or the online process does not cover the ticket.

Leave room between a train journey and a separately booked flight. A ticket on one service does not guarantee protection for a missed connection with another operator.

Common questions

Do I need a paper ticket?

For an e-ticket journey, you do not need to collect a paper ticket. Bring the original passport used for purchase and your booking record. Use the staffed inspection gate if the automatic gate cannot read the passport.

Can I board at any station in the city?

No. Use the station and service shown on the ticket. Different stations can be a substantial journey apart.

A practical booking walkthrough

How to book a China train with a foreign passport

  1. Open the official service. Use China Railway 12306 in English or the official app. Create an account using reachable contact details.
  2. Verify your identity. Follow the passport verification prompts. China Railway also supports identity verification at station ticket offices if you cannot complete the online process. Bring the original passport.
  3. Search carefully. Enter the date and cities, then compare the full station names, departure time, arrival time and seat class. A city can have multiple stations.
  4. Add each passenger. Enter every traveler’s name and passport details exactly as the service requests. Check the train, date, class and total before payment.
  5. Pay and check the order. Choose an accepted payment method and look for a successfully issued ticket in the order record; a submitted request alone is not proof of a ticket.
  6. At the station. Bring the same original passport used for booking. Leave time for security and locate the train and gate on the departure screens. If an automatic gate cannot read your passport, ask for the staffed lane.
