City life
Xi’an Bell Tower
A historic tower at the center of Xi’an, near the Drum Tower and the old city’s food streets.

About this place
Why visit
The tower sits where historic routes and modern traffic meet. It is a useful starting point for understanding the walled city’s layout, but it is not the same place as the nearby Drum Tower. The surrounding streets turn the monument into a setting for food, shopping and evening walks.
Details worth noticing
- The tower’s timber structure
- Views along the principal streets
- The contrast between old roofs and traffic
Before you go
Plan your visit
The Bell Tower stands in a traffic circle. Use signed pedestrian passages and choose between entering the monument and viewing it from surrounding public spaces. The Drum Tower is a different nearby landmark.
Choose either a visit inside or a street-level evening view. Use pedestrian crossings and signed access passages rather than trying to approach across the road.
Nearby visits and onward travel
The Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter form a compact central combination; the Terracotta Army requires its own out-of-city journey.
Getting there & around Xi'an ↗A flexible day idea
A suggested day
Use this day plan as a guide. We can adjust the walking, transport and breaks for your group.
- Start
Understand the center
Begin around the Bell Tower and orient yourself to the old city’s major streets. If visiting inside, give the timber architecture and surrounding views a focused visit.
- Explore
Drum Tower and lanes
Continue toward the Drum Tower and choose a few public lanes around the food district. Take a proper meal break rather than trying every snack in one walk.
- Finish
Evening city scene
Return to a suitable public viewpoint for the tower after dark, or finish earlier with dinner. Follow crossings and crowd routing when moving between blocks.
