The Great Wall
Mountain ridges, watchtowers and wall sections through changing seasons.

About this place
The wall is a network of fortifications rather than a single attraction with one entrance. Choosing a section is therefore the first real decision: access, gradients and the amount of restoration change the experience. A short stretch with time to pause often tells you more than a rushed march between distant towers.

Choose one visitor section around your walking level and accommodation. Steep staircases are part of many routes; transport to a gate does not remove the climb. A countryside Wall day deserves space of its own.
Choose one named section before arranging transport. Treat photographs of remote, unrestored stretches as inspiration rather than a promise of visitor access.
Combine with a countryside meal near the same section; leave the Forbidden City and other central sights for another day.
Getting there & around Beijing ↗A flexible day idea
Use this day plan as a guide. We can adjust the walking, transport and breaks for your group.
Leave Beijing for your chosen section, with the correct entrance and return pickup agreed. Keep the morning for the journey and orientation rather than a second major monument.
Walk between a manageable number of watchtowers, pausing for the changing ridge views. Shorten the route if the steps, wind or heat make a longer stretch uncomfortable.
Have a meal near the chosen section or return to Beijing for dinner. Keep the evening flexible after the outdoor day.

Badaling is convenient for a rail-based outing. Mutianyu is a good choice if you want a mountain setting and can arrange a car or bus connection. Both have steep stretches; choose your route and transport before buying tickets.
Best for: a first visit with a high-speed rail option and established visitor facilities. It can be busy on weekends and holidays.
Getting there: search China Railway 12306 for trains to Badalingchangcheng (八达岭长城); confirm your departure station, train and walk or onward connection to the entrance. Bus and car options also exist; check current routes and return departures before leaving.
Walking: the restored wall has slopes and steep steps. Allow extra time in wet or icy weather. A cable car can reduce the climb but does not make all areas step-free.
Tickets: Beijing’s visitor guidance describes passport ticketing and the “长城内外旅游” WeChat account. Check the latest entry and cable-car options separately and keep your original passport.

Best for: mountain scenery, a private-car day or visitors seeking a choice of lift-assisted routes. Allow a full outing from Beijing.
Getting there: Beijing’s current guide describes bus 916 Express from Dongzhimen to Huairou Beidajie, followed by H23, H3 or H71 to Mutianyu Scenic Area. Check the current timetable and return service; a prearranged private vehicle is a door-to-door alternative.
Walking and lifts: an enclosed cable car and other visitor facilities serve different parts of the site. Check the boarding point, direction and return options before buying: a cable car, chairlift or toboggan ticket is not necessarily interchangeable. On the wall, expect steps and uneven walking.
Tickets: the scenic area’s official site and its WeChat account accept reservations. Check whether admission, shuttle and your selected lift are included; take the passport used for booking.
