About this place
Why visit
The Dazu carvings bring Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian themes into a shared artistic landscape. Large compositions attract attention, but smaller figures, gestures and narrative details can be equally revealing. Different carving groups are spread across the area, so a visit starts with deciding which site or sites you mean.
Details worth noticing
- Narrative carving groups
- Expressions and small gestures
- Relationships between faiths
Before you go
Plan your visit
Name the carving group in the plan. Baodingshan and Beishan are distinct sites, not entrances to one compact monument. Choose one principal site first, and allow for the out-of-city transfer and walking conditions.
Choose the named carving cluster and verify transport to it. Do not assume that the broad name Dazu describes one compact entrance or an attraction inside central Chongqing.
Nearby visits and onward travel
Another Dazu carving cluster needs extra time and transport. Hongyadong and central Chongqing belong to a separate urban evening or day.

A suggested day
Use this day plan as a guide. We can adjust the walking, transport and breaks for your group.
- Start
Journey to the chosen site
Travel from Chongqing to the agreed carving group. Begin with an introduction to the religious traditions and the layout so the scenes have context.
- Explore
Read the carvings
Spend time with a few narrative compositions, noticing gestures and ordinary-life details as well as the larger figures. Take a proper rest instead of treating the carvings as a rapid photo circuit.
- Finish
A measured return
Include a local meal and return to Chongqing. A second carving group is an option only when it fits the party’s interest and the actual day’s travel.
